Welcome to 2017 NEU International Summer School

1.       University Profile

Northeastern University (NEU) is located in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, China. The university is one of China’s high-level universities designated for the state key construction of the "211 Project" and "985 Project".

Founded in April 1923, NEU adheres to the research goal of serving for the national strategic and regional development; meanwhile, it encourages free exploration and promotes collaborative innovation. The level of basic research is increasing steadily and the competitiveness of technological innovation is being enhanced. With the policy of opening up to the world, NEU has established long-term stable academic cooperation with 198 universities and institutions in 34 countries and regions.

In this summer, NEU intends to open an international summer school program with the theme "Economics and Management: Cross-cultural and Multi-disciplinary Studies" to invite PhD candidates from the famous universities at all over the world.

2.       The Program

NEU opens the summer school with the theme of "Economics and Management: Cross-cultural and Multi-disciplinary Studies." It is a short-term class for PhD students in economics and management/business from different universities in different countries. It attempts to construct an international academic platform for participating students to advance knowledge, enhance exchange, enlighten creative thinking, expend their own horizons and find their interesting topics through cross-cultural and multi-disciplinary coalescence.

The summer school will invite PhD students from and outside China. Several professors from universities outside China will be invited as instructors of the short- term studies. Each professor will give half or one-day lecture (talk) in his/her own research interests in economics and management/business.

Participating students can learn by exchange among participating students with different academic backgrounds and different cultures, learn within or beyond their areas by lectures given by invited professors, and get assistance for their research issues.

The duration of the summer school will be 12 days. Its forms mainly include lectures and discussions. It encourages interactions among students and professors. The summer school will also organize extracurricular activities like company visit and local cultural tour.

The summer school is hosted by the Graduate School of NEU, 

organized by the School of Business Administration, NEU.

3.       The Date and Place

Official language of the summer school is English.

Date: July 3 to July 14, 2017. Duration of the summer school will be 12 days.

Place: Northeastern University (Nanhu Campus & Hunnan Campus)

Class Topics

The summer school invites professors from universities outside China as instructors. Each professor gives half or one-day lecture (talk) in his/her own research interests in economics and management/business. Professors can set their own specific topics, which would probably cover new progress, recent research issues, research methodology, and/or understandings of their areas.

Specific topics will be listed in class schedule.

At the end of the studies, students will receive course completion certificates.

4.       Professors for 2017 International PhD Students Summer School at NEU

Kajal Lahiri

Distinguished Professor of Economics and Health Policy, Management & Behavior in University at Albany, State University of New York. Director of Econometric Research Institute (1982 - ). Research interests include Econometrics, Forecasting, and Economics of Health. He was supported by National Science Foundation, the World Bank, NY State Division of Budget, International Monetary Fund, Social Security Administration, US Department of Transportation, and the National Institutes of Health. Published papers in Econometrica, American Economic, Review, Journal of Applied Econometrics, International Economic Review, etc.

Bernard Pierce

Professor Pierce is Emeritus Professor of Accounting at DCU Business School, Dublin City University, Ireland, where he held a number of roles, including Executive Dean. A professionally qualified accountant, he is a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Ireland (FCA) and a Fellow of The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA). Professor Pierce’s work on management control and performance management has been published in top Accounting journals, including: Accounting, Organizations and Society, Auditing: A Journal of Practice & Theory, Management Accounting Research, Accounting, Auditing and Accountability Journal, Accounting and Business Research, Journal of Business Ethics, International Journal of Auditing, The European Accounting Review, The Journal of Applied Accounting Research and The British Accounting Review.

Keun Lee

Professor of Economics, Seoul National University, and Director of Institute of Economic Research, SNU and Center for Economic Catch-up Inc. He is an editor of Research Policy, and Associate Editor-in-Chief of Asian Journal of Technology Innovation. His research interest mainly focuses on economics of catch-up. He has won the 2014 Schumpeter Award.

Manpreet Singh Hora

Associate Professor at the Scheller College of Business, Georgia Institute of Technology, PhD in Operations Management. His research examines managerial decision-making in mitigating losses and enhancing firm performance in supply chain management. Dr. Hora has published in journals such as Management Science, Journal of Operations Management and Production and Operations Management (POM). His research awards include the Chan Hahn Best Paper Award from the Academy of Management and his work has been covered by NPR, CNN Money and Bloomberg Business Week. He serves as a Senior Editor for the POM journal.

Vincent G. Duffy

Vincent Duffy is an associate professor of Industrial Engineering at Purdue University. Professor Duffy has been chair or co-chair of twelve international conferences including four International Conferences on Human Factors and Ergonomics in Healthcare held jointly with Applied Human Factors and Ergonomics International (AHFE). He was chair for six conferences on Digital Human Modeling and Applications in Health, Safety, Ergonomics and Risk Management held as part of Human-Computer Interaction International since 2007. His dissertation initially led to co-authored studies that outline an empirical test for mediation effects in implementing Total Quality Management. Dr. Duffy’s research in perception-based empirical model development in virtual and real environments has contributed to improved safety in design.

Tony C. Garrett

Dr. Tony Charles Garrett is an associate professor of Korea University. He has been visiting scholar of Otago University and Hitotsubashi University. His main research area includes new product development, innovation management, brand image, and country image. He has published many academic articles in SCCI listed journals, such as Journal of Product Innovation Management, International Marketing Review, Journal of Business Research, etc. Dr. Garrett has been invited to be the guest editor of Australasian Marketing Journal for Global Marketing Conference in 2014 and 2016.

Bert Sadowski

Associate Professor in the Economics of Innovation and Technological Change at the University of Technology Eindhoven (TU/e) (the Netherlands) and Guest Professor at Trento University (Italy). He specializes in the economics of information and communication technology (ICT) industries and international business strategies of Chinese multinational enterprises. He has published papers in Journal of Management Studies, Journal of International Business Studies, Research Policy, Technological Forecasting and Social Change, Telecommunications Policy and so on. He has undertaken research projects from European Union (EU), Dutch National Science Foundation (NWO) and Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).

Yunchuan(Frank) Liu

Associate Professor of Business Administration, University of Illinois. He has received his PhD in Marketing from Columbia University in 2003.His teaching and research Interests include Distribution Channel Management, Pricing Strategy, Advertising, Retailing, E-commerce, Marketing Research, and Marketing Management. He has published papers in Management Science, Marketing Science, Quantitative Marketing and Economics etc.

Lim Yun Fong

Chang Jiang Chaired Professor, Associate Professor of Operations Management, Area Coordinator, Operations Management PGR Coordinator, Operations Management Qualifications. PhD from Georgia Institute of Technology in 2005. Research Areas and Areas of Expertise: Operations, Supply Chain Management, Sustainable Operations, Operations Planning, Scheduling and Control, Inventory Management. Published papers in Operations Research, Management Science, Manufacturing and Service Operations Management, Production and Operations Management etc.

5.       Enrollment Information

(1)  Number of participants

The quota of the summer school is approximately 30 students. The participants should be the PhD candidates from the different universities and academic institutes.

(2)  Applicants Eligibility

a)     Applicants outside China should be Non-Chinese students with valid passports;

b)     Research fields: Management/Business, Economics;

c)     Physical health;

d)     Applicants should be the PhD candidates.

(3)  Registration and admission

a)     Registration time: Now until June 15th, 2017;

b)     Application materialsPlease submit the electronic copies of Application Form and a Recommendation Letter from a professor;

c)     Admission: We will choose the participating students from the applicants.

6.       Travel and Accommodations

There are no tuition fees and registration fees. NEU will cover economy air tickets or train tickets, accommodations, meals for all the successful applicants during the period of the summer school in Shengyang.
